Breaks

Shakes – Gangbusters [Gella Remix] 0

BREAKBEAT RAVE GROOVE A superb driving groove that goes to prove that there is life yet ni the hackneyed old dog of breaks. Admittedly the dog is half blind, can’t feed itself and smells like death but it’s breaks.

Call it “Future Jungle” if you like but it’s still going to shit all over your rug.

Mooqee – Supacat Police 0

ALL STAR REGGAE MASH Okay, I got one:Cutty Ranks, Bob Marley and KRS ONE walk into a bar, right. The joke unfolds with hilarious consequences. Unless the barman happens to be gay then it’s really not going to end well.

Prince – Gett Off (The Apple Scruffs Edit) 1

PRINCE GETS A RINSE With a back catalogue larger than Prince’s ego and only just a bit smaller than his vocal range, The Apple Scruffs have remixed the vast majority of all music released since 1973. Rumour has it there is a machine in Glasgow into which you tip second hand record collections and out the other end comes a whole bunch of disco edits.

Adam Freeland – Coastal Breaks stream 0

The Marine Parade head honcho resurfaces and offers up his seminal Coastal Breaks DJ mixes for streaming. From back when breaks was, y’know, fun. A brace of the finest and, for this corner of the internet, most influential mixtapes ever recorded.

BREAKS IS COMING BACK….yaaaaaawwwwwnn….

All Good Funk Alliance – In The Rain 0

BUMPING BREAKS Treading terribly close to, but never quite stepping in, that steaming pile of Nu-Funk All Good Funk Alliance spin out a bumping breaks track with a Latino twist. Falls foul of a “check-me-and-all-my-name-checking” intro bollocks but that’s what the loop function on your DJ gadgets is designed to eliminate.

Lee Coombs and The Drumattic Twins – Tribal Tension 2012 0

Not many artists escaped unscathed from the sinking vessel of formulaic misery that was the good ship NuBreaks. Lee Coombs and The Drumattic Twins did however keep powder dry and continued to roll out some amazing, dubbed up breaks tracks while all around them were up to their necks drowning in snare build ups. Tribal Tension was one of the standout releases from Thrust and Coomb’s is offering up the stems for remix along with this redux for 2012 from Uberzone.

Jimi Needles – Eighteen Minutes of Fury 0

Shoe-horning 20 tracks into an 18 minute slash-and-burn mix tape Jimi Needles’ ruthless efficiency ensures there is still space on your iPhone for pointless apps, smutty screen grabs and shit photos of your mates doing something we can’t quite make out…you really had to be there. Scuba – Ignition Key 2

YAY! PROPER BREAKBEAT  If you long for the old days of sophisticated, forward thinking breakbeat that shakes your grey matter as well as the dance floor then look no further..
Dubstep stable Hot Flush Recordings have   saved the whole fucking planet with the release of Scuba’s “Personality”.

If you were going to shoe-horn it into a genre pigeon hole it would, quite likely be, Nu Skool Breaks.
A ye olde genre that showed so much promise but ended stuck on bench in 2003 growing a massive snare-roll beard and drinking Kestral with the noughties Big Beat has-beens.

Seriously hot shit.

Tipper – Puzzle Dust 2

GLITCH-HOP SQUELCH-OFF Just how anally retentive you have to be to produce music this detailed is anybody’s guess. Tipper probably has everything in his fridge neatly labelled and all the coasters on his coffee table aligned with a set square. That and a hearing response that plummets to 4hz.
