McTwist – Dream Step 2 (Kraymon’s Broken Beat Remix) 0

  • Future Garage?
  • Just after tea-time dubstep?
  • Not too distant future breakbeat?
  • Post-ironic-event-horizon 2-step?

Having long given up on taking genres seriously it’s good to see that Kraymon clears up any uncertainty on where to pigeon hole this and labels it Broken Beat. Good man.

File under awesome.

Jess Mills – Pixelated People (Nocturnal Sunshine Remix) 1

MAYA JANE COLES DUBSTEP ALIAS – Just look at THAT for a slice of classic carboot vinyl artwork. As you rifle your way through stacks of dog eared and damp 12″s on the hunt for those long lost gems you see faces just like this burning with desire for success. Now relegated the corner of a charity shop amongst chewed toy telephones and tape cassettes of Five Star. They’ve even managed an authentic Letraset typeface to make it look extra dated. Is this a retro aesthetic of sheer genius, or just a massively short-sited abortion of artwork? Answers on a postcard to someone who gives a fuck.

Maya Jane Coles once again rises above the talents of her dubstep associates in the Nocturnal Sunshine guise. Nobody likes a smart arse, Maya.

Loudat’s Best Of 2011 1

As the year draws to a close and the apocalypse comes galloping over the horizon it’s a good opportunity to look back all teary eyed at 2011. Here’s the obligatory post summarising the year past with a track selected from every month. This is the best week to go blog dredging – everyone is compiling their “best of” posts so you can find a bunch of decent tunes you may have missed without actually having to read anything. Sweet.

Scroobius Pip – The Struggle (LAXX & Walsh MIX) 1

WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT FUCKABILITY - So says soothsayer Scroobius Pip. And he’s probably right. What woman could not resist the charm and allure of such an incredible beard? Any lady would hinge herselves open for facial hair of such calibre. Laxx and Walsh set to work on “The Struggle” and rinse out what might be describes as a post-apocalyptic,dubbed out saddle ballad.

Submotion Orchestra – Always (Laxx remix) 0

If you get the chance to catch Submotion Orchestra you should grab it with both hands and lightly throttle it . A 7 piece live dubstep/DnB experience to behold which is good because dubstep, lets face it, is dull as watching tin rust. Most live dubstep performances plumb the depths of bass wanking self indulgence  - however Submotion Orchestra demonstrate intellect and deft musicianship so you should Keep your ears peeled for more from this crew.  “Always” gets a tweak over with Laxx on the buttons.

Aquasky – Raise The Devil 3

WASHED UP RAVERS BACK FROM THE DEAD - having been under chemical restraint in a studio furnished only with cups of Bovril and a bag of rationed parma-violets Aquasky return to the fold with an album of tearout bass, breaks and gnarliness. As with all dance production albums you’re going to find a couple steamng turds and a few absolutely cracking tracks that prop up the release. (stantons, plumps etc) This album sampler offers an insight into the vicious Aquasky sound pallet as well as some point-and-laugh vocals *titter*. Have an explore.

Massive Attack vs Burial – “4 Walls / Paradise Circus” 0

FANTASY PRODUCTION PRESSING Responsible for some of the most emotive and deeply textured music England has produced this collaboration is a Fantasy Producer cluster-fuck come true. Available on a strictly limited vinyl run of 1000 pressings this Burial and Massive Attack release is soon to be as rare as rocking horse shit so you should probably get 2 copies and use one of them to taunt poor people.
Comes complete with Burial’s trademark vinyl crackle. On vinyl. Which will crackle.

If there was a music video it would probably be on VHS with digitally enhanced smearing.

Karin Park – Tiger Dreams (Photek Remix) 0

DRINKING ON THE DUBSTEP Having been nominated for penning “The Best Norwegian Song Of All Time” Karin Park carries a rather weighty accolade. How the fuck does a song get selected for such lofty praise and more to the point what happens to the tunes that don’t make it to first place ? Slip into total obscurity like a Mercury Award nominee ?

In years to come we can expect to see Karin Parker, destitute and toothless begging for change whilst angrily slurring:

” I…iiiiii. Mmee..IIIIII wrote the ssssecond beeesht tune offff all facking tiiimmmeee you Caaaants….”

Alas there is no second place for the best Norwegian tune in the history of the civilised world so she’s just going to have to make do with being remixed by “The Best Producer In The World Called Rupert”

Emeli Sande – Heaven (PYRAMID Re-Fix) 1

EPIC BREAKSTEP RERUB -A misspent teenage youth aving my tits off to happy hardcore remixes of Beverly Craven and Whitney Houston makes me a total sucker for this vocal and rolling break. All the kids that I was partying with at the time ended up dead or in jail but it was a character building experience.
My mother would heartily disagree. Emeli Sande gets a peak time reworking from Pyramid.
There’s a lump of base putty round here somewhere….

It’s not as good as the original mind. Sometimes songs climb into my head and dance around painting memories in glorious colour. And I go all gooey. Pffft….
