Mel Torme – Comin’ Home Baby 0

SWING JAZZ SMOOTHNESS – it’s sunday, so you get some old stuff from the arse end of my record collection. Sunday morning? Been up since friday ? If you’re anywhere near me playing records you’ll hear this. Todays musical interlude from decades past comes from Mel Torme, a singer, drummer ,jazz musician and broadcasting behemoth of the 50′s and 60′s. Also known as the “Velvet Fog” Mel Torme was brought to my attention by my awesome Mum over cups of tea and ginger biscuits.

Arthur Godfrey – Too Fat Polka 0

MUSIC FOR SKINNY CHICKS - Yay it’s Sunday and I get to root around in the dusty end of my music collection to share with you some of the golden oldies I’ve acquired over the years.  I tend to stick these old tunes on in the ridiculous hours at parties and festivals while people wait for the bar to reopen and they always crack a smile.

This stands as a testament to the glorious ignorance of political correctness in the 50′s.  Arthur Godfrey was a prominent TV and Radio personality in the 40s and 50s across the USA and by all accounts he was a complete and utter prick.  He plucked the ukekele and chuckled as he sang tedious songs about fat chicks, beating up his daughter, his dislike of  black folk and the joys of smoking fags.

Fortunately he died of emphysema in the 1980′s. haha.

Buddy Rich – The Beat Goes On 1

BADASS BIG BAND SWING – Buddy Rich is widely considered to be one of the best jazz drummers in the history of beards. He was also a legendary band leader who valiantly maintained the popularity of big band swing and jazz in the 50s while it gradually slipped from public favour. This is a famous recording of Buddy leading his band from the behind the drums with the wonderful, lilting tones of his 12 year old daughter on the mic. You might know this one from the All Seeing I cover

Louis Prima – Jump Jive An Wail 0

RIOTOUS 40′s SWING – There lives in the depths of my record collection a significant chunk of music from the 20′s,30′s,40′s and 50′s which regularly gets pulled out at parties in the stupid hours.
So much in fact that Sundays at Loudat are going to be handed over to the perpetuation of ace music your grandparents might have boogied to.

To start you off here’s Louis Prima , a Sicilian-American trumpet player with a New Orleans upbringing who led several successful swing bands and big bands throughout the 40′s.

You are already familiar with work – Louis Prima was the guy who sang the part of the Orang-utan King Louie in the Jungle Book ” I Wanna Be Like You”. Remember that, it might win you a pub quiz one evening.
