Million Stylez – Miss Fatty Fatty (Dub Boy’s Fatty Dance Refix) 0

DANCEHALL DUB BWAY - This is a white dude from Bristol remixing a tune by a half japanse half french chap from Sweden singing in a musical style largely inspired by an Black gentleman who wasn’t as immortal as a lot of stoned people hoped.

That Ethiopian chap in the background there, that’s none other than Prince Haile Selassi The First. According to Rastafarian religion he was God incarnate, the actual personification of Jah walking the earth.
Unfortunately Selassi lacked the super human abilities one might expect of an all powerful deity and so was unable to defend himself from disgruntled military officers who in 1974 quite easily killed him.

He leaves behind a legacy of perpetually caned black people who have brought to the world some cracking music.

Ed Sheeran – The A-Team {Shy FX’s Ackee and Saltfish Mix} 1

STUNNING REGGAE TUNE This has been looping in my earholes for a couple of days now and I’ve come to the conclusion that Yes, indeed this is an excellent tune. One has to be careful in these matters as my shell-likes are prone to loving anything with a reggae lick. I once found myself in The Jamaican Eating House slurping Red Stripe merrily bopping to a cover of “My Heart Will Go On”.

Everyone that sees this on HypeMachine is going to see “The A-Team (Shy FX remix) . So what you’re likely to get is a bunch of washed up ravers looking for Bambaataa escaping from a maximum security stockade. What they’re going to get is a sensational Shy FX reggae fix-up of this neatly programmed remix.

Jstar – Watch That Sound 0

A very brief appearance by the sun got London all excited for all about 15 minutes this weekend. There were daffodils, a bit of blue sky and it actually stopped raining for a bit. Spring had sproinged. Now it’s back to the earth shattering reality of the damp monday grind. Fret not- to bring a ray of sunshine into your life bootleg don Jstar is handing out a free dub for download. It’s hard to slit your wrists listening to reggae.

Smiley Culture – Police Officer – Jinx & Gella inna Jungle mix 1

RAGGA JUNGLE RINSEOUT – Due for imminent release on NiceUp! Records Jink and Gella give the 80′s reggae hit “Police Officer” a proper good Jungle work over. It’s always interesting to find out what happened to pop artists that slipped into total obscurity so what became of Smiley Culture? Broke and destitute on the streets of London?
Appearing at the grand opening your local SupaSava?
Turning on the christmas lighs in Maidenhead?

No. Smiley Culture, would you believe, runs a fucking DIAMOND MINE in Grenada.

Pimping.

JW & Blaze – Palance 0

SOCA JUMP UP Dance music isn’t really tickling my balls this evening so I’m digging my way through the links to find anything of interest and KAPOW ,some mad as all fuckery Soca complete with low budget video! For the uninitiated Soca is SOul CAlypso, the contraction of two words which seems to an etymological habit of Trinidadians. This track “Palance” is a contraction of PArty, Lime and dANCE (lime= hanging out)

Judging by the camera work I think this might have been filmed by Mohammed Ali on a unicycle. Lucky that the images they did manage to fit in the shot are piss take, you really wouldn’t want to have to do this twice.

Soca is weird, I don’t really get unless I’m smashed on rum and waving a Western Union bandana.  Of all the synth noises available in the world why choose the sound from the theme to Fun House?

Alborosie – Kingston Town 0

HEAVY ROOTS RIDDIM Is that it do you think? Christmas could finally be over, have a check around and see:

  • Is your house now full of poorly manufactured plastic gifts imported from the Shenzhen district?
  • Is your bin bursting full of cardboard and heat-shrink packaging ?
  • Are you considerably fatter and slower than 7 days ago ?
  • Does your credit card now smoulder and your bank account echo?

If you answered yes to all of the above then there is a good chance that you’ve spent the past few days celebrating the birth of a fictional character and you are now a much worse person for doing so.

You’re poor, you’re fat, you’re contributing to landfill and several thousand miles away baffled Chinese child workers are wondering what the fuck you’re going to do with a plastic gun that fires nuns.

Nina Simone- My Baby Just Cares For Me 0

THE TRUE ROOTS OF REGGAE – so says the legendary reggae selector DJ Derek. Who’s going to argue with a Bristolian, reggae DJ pensioner that wears waistcoats and has visited every single Wetherspoons pub in the UK?

If you ever get chance to catch DJ Derek you really should drop everything and go have a wiggle to his record collection – My Baby Just Cares For Me is a regular fixture and it’s really quite something to hear it played at peak time. GUARANTEED to make the place properly swing and “draw nuff gash” onto the dancefloor.

This track has been in my collection since Mother dearest forced me to listen to it, and it wasn’t til I heard Derek drop it that I realised just what a stupendous piece of music it was for playing to a crowd. ‘Ave it Derek.

Robyn – Dancehall Queen 0

DIGITAL DANCEHALL – She’s got the haircut of a martian, the voice of a twelve year old was once banned from television for being too hot. After european pop success with Show Me Love , Robyn left BMG to set up her own Konichiwa Records and generally became fucking ace. Robyn deserves a gold medal and some guns for engineering her own shamelessly pop career. I had the good fortune of finding this tune while snooping around Twitter (which I’ve only just got round to playing with). Another killingest concoction of her oh-so-thin vocal, crunked up production and pop tune mastery.

Prince Fatty – Supersize 0

prince fatty

SHIMMY SHIMMY YA – Prince Fatty drops his Supersize Album later this month upon which you will find this reggae cover smash of the ODB classic “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” amongst a whole host of polished reggae and dub productions.

The Bandcamp search tags for Supersize include the “Brighton” which seems a little up itself. I fucking hate Brighton but I must concede that clicking through on Bandcamp for tracks tagged “Brighton” does, regrettably turn up some quality music. Bugger. One day I’ll have to just get myself a smack habit and go record shopping down there.
