It’s been said that all DJ’s are just failed drummers. But what do you know, Jimi Needles – esteemed bootleg vendor and fader wrecker – has a “side” project of that’s more sophisticated than your average disc jockey.
Hannah Williams and The Tastemakers ,for which Jimi is the drummer ,create a timeless sound that invokes the holy trilogy of musical terms bandied about by parental types – “Funky.. Soulful…Groovy..” you name a cringe worthy adjective and these guys have been tarred with it.
Fronted by the magnificent lungs of Hannah Williams the band are deftly led with a voice that slides from strutting brass to slippery tones of emotion. From their previous incarnation as Hannah Williams and The One Takes their robust tune-smithing and tight performances were matched with recordings on the rawer side of engineering. The untempered productions and powerful renderings gave the band the abiding motor-city timbre that struck chords with everyone from Craig Charles to Sharon Jones.
